Protect Life Amendment

 The amendment would state:

“To protect life. To defend the dignity of all human life, and to protect mothers and unborn children from efforts to expand abortion even to the day of birth, we the people of the State of Iowa declare that this Constitution shall not be construed to recognize, grant, or secure a right to abortion or to require the public funding of abortion.”

2021 Protect Life Amendment Updates

  • HJR 5 passed in the House of Representatives
  • SJR 2 passed in the State Government Committee and will go to full floor vote in the Senate next week.

Once passed, the two chambers will need to come together and determine the language for the bill and then it will be completed for this session.  We will need to pass this in another legislative session and then it will go to a vote before the people of Iowa.

Although a long process, we must stay the course.  This is the best path in moving forward to undue what activist judges in the Iowa Supreme Court in 2018.  By creating a ‘so-called’ fundamental right to abortion in our Iowa Constitution, they have taken the rights away from our duly elected legislators to create law and taken the rights of Iowa citizens to determine commonsense regulations regarding abortion.

If a state is able to challenge Roe vs. Wade (the court ruling that legalized abortion in our country in 1973), abortion law goes back to the state.  If we are not able to fix this mistake, we could become the abortion mecca of the country.
